Rediscover Jesus in the Land With Luke 2018

Principal Lecturer: Dr. Nicholas King, S.J., Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Heythrop College, University of London Luke’s Gospel places Jesus not only at the heart of the Jewish world of the first century, but at the heart of the Roman world into which the Christian Gospel exploded. This course will examine themes of journey, discipleship, and care for the poor within the narratives of Luke’s Gospel. Jewish and Christian sources will be studied to highlight specific teaching. Dr. Nicholas King, S.J., is currently Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Heythrop College, University of London. Previously, he was Chair of the Catholic Biblical Association and Visiting Professor at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College, where he taught New Testament and Koine Greek. For 12 years, he was a lecturer in the same subjects at Oxford University. Prior to coming to Oxford, he taught in South Africa, where he served as a District Observer for its first democratic elections. He has published a new translation of the New Testament (published by Kevin Mayhew in 2008), and more recently a translation of the entire Greek Bible (available from the same publisher). He studied Classics at Oxford University at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is the Provincial’s Delegate for Formation for the Jesuits in Britain. This course can be taken for credit with Regis College and the University of St. Michael’s College, Faculty of Theology. Jerusalem is a bustling ancient city whose history engages people in an encounter with the text, the people and the land.  It is central to the sacred story of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This course will provide an opportunity for deepening biblical understanding, inter-religious dialogue and personal reflection for those involved in faith formation.  Jewish Christian and Muslim sources will be studied to highlight specific teaching. This course is designed for people working in education. Fr. Scott Lewis, S.J. is a member of the California Province of the Society of Jesus. He is Academic Dean and Associate Professor of New Testament at Regis College, the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto. He earned an S.S.L.
