September 2021

It is a great privilege and pleasure for me to welcome students, faculty, and staff to Regis College at the beginning of the 2021–22 academic year! It is a special joy to greet those who are new to Regis, and to wish you well in all that lies ahead for you here. And above all for our students, incoming and returning, I hope that Regis, the Jesuit School of Theology in Canada, is and will be for you a place of cutting-edge learning and of intellectual discovery, of pastoral sensitivity and of prayerful reflection, of community and friendship, and of growth in self-knowledge and in generous service of persons of diverse cultures and traditions.

The pandemic continues to challenge all of us in various ways, but Regis is taking steps, along with the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto, to ensure safety while taking advantage of the opportunity to hold some classes in person and some remotely. By following the established protocols, let us care for one another and look forward to life after COVID.

Over the past year, Regis and the University of St. Michael’s College have been working hard on a possible alliance, or federation, of our two institutions, especially of the two theology faculties. Much progress has been made with such a proposal, and more about it will soon be made public. This federation would respect what is distinctive about each of these institutions, while facilitating a much closer collaboration than has existed between them. Such an alliance offers great potential to strengthen and promote Toronto as a world-class centre for Catholic theology and its creative engagement with the world. I dare say that the prospect of this federation provides many reasons for joyous expectation.
