Did religion really matter to ordinary people in the past? It can be hard to get around a lack of documents or beyond histories written largely about institutions. We might try thinking of lay religious ideas and practices as ordinary dialects that gesture to more prescriptive institutional grammar, while also adapting it, ignoring it, operating apart from it, and occasionally even in opposition to it. Who do historians speak to, and who do we speak for?
