DESCRIPTION:This Fall Film Series\, 2018\, looks at the desire for a place of belonging and community that is rooted in what it means to be human. The Beatitude in Matthew’s Gospel: Blessed are the Meek\, they shall inherit the Earth\, addresses this longing. The Meek here are the ones without power\, displaced\, abused\, overlooked\, cast out\, and to promise them the earth for an inheritance is to promise them a place where they can establish themselves\, discover their identity\, have a future where they can pass on their heritage and traditions\, and celebrate life together. \nMonty Williams\, S.J.’s courses and research explores the dynamics of desire and narrative in spirituality using contemporary critical theory and film\, His work in spirituality and direction started in his formation as a Jesuit in the early seventies. SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Jesus with John 2018
DESCRIPTION:Principal Lecturer: Prof. Kiernan O’ Mahony\, OSA\, Augustinian Friar and Biblical Scholar \nJohn takes us behind Jesus’ ministry where we get a glimpse of the paradox and complexity  which makes this important text the most Jewish and the most anti-Jewish of the Gospels. This course will examine theological discourse\, and difficult texts related to Jews and Judaism within the narratives of John’s Gospel. Jewish and Christian sources will be studied to highlight specific teaching. \nKieran J. O’Mahony STB\, STL\, HDipEd\, LSS\, PhD is an Augustinian friar and biblical scholar. His studies took him to the Milltown Institute (Dublin)\, the Gregorian University (Rome)\, the National University of Ireland (Maynooth)\, the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Rome)\, the École Biblique (Jerusalem)\, Trinity College (Dublin). He worked for twenty-two years in the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy\, latterly as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Scripture. He now works as Co-ordinator of Biblical Studies for the Archdiocese of Dublin. His main research interest is the letters of St Paul and the Gospel of John. His publications include Do We Still Need St Paul (Dublin: Veritas\, 2011) and Speaking From Within: Biblical Approaches for Effective Preaching (Dublin: Veritas 2016). His wider interests include the archaeology and history of the Holy Land. SUMMARY:Encounter with the Book: The People and the Land
DESCRIPTION:Jerusalem is a bustling ancient city whose history engages people in an encounter with the text\, the people and the land.  It is central to the sacred story of Christianity\, Judaism and Islam. This course will provide an opportunity for deepening biblical understanding\, inter-religious dialogue and personal reflection for those involved in faith formation.  Jewish Christian and Muslim sources will be studied to highlight specific teaching. \nThis course is designed for people working in education. \nFr. Scott Lewis\, S.J. is a member of the California Province of the Society of Jesus. He is Academic Dean and Associate Professor of New Testament at Regis College\, the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto. He earned an S.S.L. at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and an S.T.D. in New Testament Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome Italy. Scott writes a weekly column for the Catholic Register newspaper and broadcasts a weekly lecture on Radio Maria Canada. \nHis areas of interest are: The Gospel of John; The history of exegesis\, especially from a Jewish perspective; Spirituality in the New Testament; Death and the Afterlife in Second Temple Judaism; Violence and the Bible. \nThis course can be taken for credit with Regis College and the University of St. Michael’s College\, Faculty of Theology. SUMMARY:Rediscover Jesus in the Land With Luke 2018
DESCRIPTION:Principal Lecturer: Dr. Nicholas King\, S.J.\, Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Heythrop College\, University of London \nLuke’s Gospel places Jesus not only at the heart of the Jewish world of the first century\, but at the heart of the Roman world into which the Christian Gospel exploded. This course will examine themes of journey\, discipleship\, and care for the poor within the narratives of Luke’s Gospel. Jewish and Christian sources will be studied to highlight specific teaching. \nDr. Nicholas King\, S.J.\, is currently Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Heythrop College\, University of London. Previously\, he was Chair of the Catholic Biblical Association and Visiting Professor at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College\, where he taught New Testament and Koine Greek. For 12 years\, he was a lecturer in the same subjects at Oxford University. Prior to coming to Oxford\, he taught in South Africa\, where he served as a District Observer for its first democratic elections. He has published a new translation of the New Testament (published by Kevin Mayhew in 2008)\, and more recently a translation of the entire Greek Bible (available from the same publisher). He studied Classics at Oxford University at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is the Provincial’s Delegate for Formation for the Jesuits in Britain. \nThis course can be taken for credit with Regis College and the University of St. Michael’s College\, Faculty of Theology.
