SUMMARY:The Dignity of Young People in a Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:  \nYears from now\, when history writes the chapter entitled “the digital age\,” will it celebrate the immense benefits that technology has delivered and the great human progress that followed? Or\, will it be a requiem of regret for the loss of so many young people? \n  \nIf we have never been a victim of online crime or abuse\, or know someone who has been\,  it is hard to relate those who have been exploited in this way. But “it becomes real when you meet a mother whose daughter was so distraught from incessant cyberbullying that she committed suicide. It becomes real when you are sitting with parents of a pre-schooler who was abducted and murdered by a paedophile who just hours before was looking at child sexual abuse images freely accessible online. It becomes real when you meet a mother whose teenage son\, the same age as your own child\, fell under the spell of the so-called Islamic State online\, travelled to Syria to fight and was killed. It becomes real when you meet with parents whose daughter\, after being exposed to online self-harm groups\, is in hospital again because she can’t stop hurting herself.” (Shields 2017) \n  \nWe can be web utopians believing that connected humanity can create a better society. And there truly are wonderful things that the Internet can do\, but what about the things that it can undo? The Internet has fundamentally transformed our young people in just one generation. We have the first generation of digital natives who feel comfortable swiping objects on their tablets and smartphones. Smartphones\, social media and communications apps are one size fits all. Accordingly\, there is no specific provision for the unique needs of young people who are not ready to take on the responsibilities of their actions or to understand the realities of the human condition they are exposed to when connected to the Internet. Today young people are groomed for sexual abuse online by people they have never met and would never have come in contact with if it were not for the internet. They are coerced into producing sexually explicit images of themselves. Offenders connect with other offenders online. They share their tactics\, strategies and their devastating acts of abuse. They pay to watch the live-streaming of children being sexually abused all over the world using anonymous access and cryto-currency mechanisms to obfuscate their identities and crimes. \n  \nThough the problems are immense progress can be made\, but this may require a new kind of thinking\, a new approach. There are no true parallels in history. The progress we make together in a collaborative way as academics\, teachers\, law enforcement officers\, health care workers\, and students will determine the future of over one billion young people who suffer abuse and violence in their everyday lives. The symposium March 28-29th  at Regis College is one small step in raising awareness of these issues and asking how can we assist in this new approach. Our keynote speakers are world renowned in their commitment to the dignity of young people today: Fr Hans Zollner SJ from Rome and Professor Elizabeth Letourneau from the USA. Our workshop leaders are local figures: Professor Faye Mishna Dean of Social Work at UofT; Fr Joseph Schner SJ faculty member at Regis College and members of local law enforcement personnel. SUMMARY:Redeeming the Anthropocene? - Fr. James Hanvey\, SJ
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join us on Tuesday\, March 26 at 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a lecture “Redeeming the Anthropocene?” presented by Regis College visiting researching scholar Fr. James Hanvey\, SJ. \nRedeeming The Anthropocene? \nOur age has been identified as the age of the Anthropocene. It is a relatively short period in the natural history of the world\, but it identifies the ways in which human activity has had a decisive effect on nature and other species. Human industrial\, agricultural and technological production and development is now recognized as the major contributing factor in the rapid shifts in earth-systems and decline in bio-diversity. Laudato Si argues for the interconnectedness of all eco-systems and calls for a far-reaching change or conversion in human activity\, industrial\, social and political systems to avert a degradation of natural resources which places all life on our planet in jeopardy. Is it possible to redeem the Anthropocene and what contribution can theology make? \nAbout Fr. James Hanvey\, SJ. \nHaving completed his term as Master of Campion Hall\, University of Oxford\, Fr. James Hanvey\, SJ is currently Visiting Research Scholar at Regis College\, University of Toronto. He is editing a collection of essays for Brill by various scholars\, ‘Id Quod Volo’ On Desire in the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. Together with Prof. Gavin Flood (Oxford) he is also editing and contributing to a collection published by Routledge\, Integrating Theologies and Ecologies. In September he takes up his appointment to the Gasson Chair\, Boston College. \nFr. James has previously held positions as Head of theology at Heythrop College\, University of London\, founding director of The Heythrop Institute for Religion\, Ethics and Public Life. He has also been a member of the Department for Social Responsibility and theological advisor to the Bishops Conference of England and Wales. He has held the Veale Chair in Ignatian Spirituality at the Milltown Institute\, Dublin\, and the Lo Schiavo Chair in Catholic Social Thought and Culture at the University of San Francisco. Although his main field of writing and teaching is systematic theology\, he has published in the fields of Jesuit Spirituality\, Vatican II\, and Political Theology with recent contributions to Understanding Human Dignity (ed. Christopher McCrudden) BA/OUP\, Dignity\, Person and the Imago Trinitatis and The Heythrop Journal\, Laudato Si and the Renewal of the Theology of Creation. In addition to his academic writing\, he writes extensively for other media such as Thinking Faith (online Journal) and Civilitá Cattolica. « Scadicare La Cultura Dell’ Abuso » Fr. If so\, please join us for another Crossroads of Theology lecture at Regis College! \nOn Monday\, March 25 at 5:15 p.m.\, Dr Christina Labriola will present a lecture “Beautiful God: The Incarnation and the Arts.” Drawing from the theological aesthetics of Hans Urs Von Balthasar\, this talk will engage St. John Paul II’s “Letter to Artists\,” along with works of art and music from the Christian tradition\, to meditate upon the ways in which artistic beauty\, through the reality of the Incarnation\, can open us up to real encounters with the God who is the source of all beauty. \nFollowing the lecture at 5:15\, supper will be served (6:15 p.m.). John Mary Fraser Centre on Wednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 4 p.m. in Classroom A of Regis College (100 Wellesley St. W.) as Dr. Patrizia Granziera presents a lecture entitled “Serpents and Dragons: Mary and Her Enemies in Mexican and Indian Art.” \nPatrizia Granziera is Professor of Art History at the University of Morelos\, Cuernavaca\, Mexico. She has a Ph.D. in Art History from University of Warwick. Her research focuses on the iconography of gardens and landscapes and on the image and symbolism of the divine feminine. Along with many published articles\, she co-authored Image of the Divine Feminine in Mexico: Aztec Goddesses and Christian Madonnas (Ashgate 2012). In her presentation\, “Serpents and Dragons: Mary and Her Enemies in Mexican and Indian Art\,” Dr. Granziera will explore how Marian images in colonial Mexico and India represented the idea of the divine feminine and how European missionaries responded to the popularity of the goddesses in these newly conquered lands. \nThis event\, sponsored by the Msrgr. SUMMARY:2019 Royackers Lecture: Justice\, Freedom and Equality: the Keys to Peace in the Holy Land
DESCRIPTION:On February 26\, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.\, please join us at Regis College in the St. Joseph Chapel for our Annual Royackers Lecture “Justice\, Freedom and Equality: the Keys to Peace in the Holy Land\,” featuring guest-speaker Miko Peled\, a Human Rights and Peace Activist. Miko will address the three universal values of ‘justice\, freedom and equality’ and will explore how these values can change the face of the Holy Land. \n  \nMiko Peled is a writer and human rights activist\, born and raised in Jerusalem. Driven by a personal family tragedy\, he wrote a book about his journey “The General’s Son\, Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” The book covers the work in which Peled’s family has been involved since his grandparents immigrated to Palestine in the early 20th century\, as part of the Zionist project. His maternal grandfather was a signer on the Israeli Declaration of Independence. His father was a General in the Israeli army and in the 1970’s\, his father pioneered the Israeli Palestinian dialogue. He devotes hi life to working for peace and divides his time between writing and travelling internationally. \n  \nThe Annual Royackers Lecture honours the memory of Fr. Martin Royackers\, S.J. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, February 13\, the Msgr. John Mary Fraser Centre for Practical Theology invites you to attend the Official Opening of the Msgr. John Mary Fraser Centre for Practical Theology at 5:30 pm followed by the Scarboro Missions Lecture in Inter-religious Dialogue at 7:30 pm. \nThe lecture is entitled “Lakota and Christian Interreligious Dialogue: Questions Surrounding the Life\, Teachings\, and Influence of Nick Black Elk\,” presented by Dr. Michael Stoeber\, Scarboro Missions Chair in Interreligious Dialogue\, Regis College. The Respondents will be Jonathan Hamilton-Diabo\, Director of Indigenous Initiatives\, University of Toronto\, and Dr. John Dadosky\, Regis College. The Moderator for the lecture will be Dr. Pamela Couture\, Jane and Geoffrey Martin Chair in Church and Community\, Emmanuel College. \nDescription:  The story about the influential Lakota healer and holy man—Black Elk Speaks (1932)—has become widely popular and an authoritative guide for North American indigenous spirituality.  However\, given Nick Black Elk’s conversion to Roman Catholicism some twenty-five years prior to its publication\, and his work as a Roman Catholic catechist\, controversy surrounds this book.  This lecture will explore various related questions: How does Nick Black Elk’s Roman Catholicism colour the dynamics of the indigenous spirituality in the book?  How much does the narrator of the story\, John Niehardt\, positively influence or distort the dynamics of the spirituality?  How might this account of indigenous spirituality have actually influenced 20th century developments in Roman Catholic spirituality?  These questions have been further complicated by the recent initiation of the cause for the sainthood of Nick Black Elk in the Roman Catholic Church.  How might this process towards canonization function to continue the Roman Catholic Church’s role in colonialism?  How might it actually work to support the indigenous spirituality that Black Elk articulated so influentially? \nThe evening’s schedule is as follows: \n5:30: Opening Remarks  \n5:45: Website Launch \n6:15: Reception \n7:30: Lecture \n

SUMMARY:Fraser Lecture: Early Jesuit Engagement with the Qur’an: Questions\, Answers\, and a Few Puzzles
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn February 11 at 4:30 p.m.\, the Msgr. John Mary Fraser Centre for Practical Theology will host a public lecture in the Regis College St. Joseph Chapel. Guest-speaker Dr. Paul Shore will deliver a lecture “Early Jesuit Engagement with the Qur’an: Questions\, Answers\, and a Few Puzzles.” \n  \nAmong the representatives of seventeenth-century Catholicism to engage with the Qur’an were four Jesuits: Stephanus Arator (1541-1612)\, Peter Pázmány (1570-1637)\, Ignazio Lomellini (c. 1565-1645)\, and Michael Nau (1633-1683).  Arator and Pázmány relied on translations and transliterations of the text of the Qur’an to construct their arguments\, which were driven as much by deep divisions within the Christian world as they were by knowledge of Islam\, and which were shaped by anxiety over the spread of Unitarianism in Eastern Europe.   Lomellini completed the first Latin translation of the Qur’an to include the entire Arabic text\, although he never traveled to an Arabic-speaking region. The commentaries he wrote suggest that his intended audience was Christian\, but his manuscript languished for centuries\, ignored by scholars. Nau spent many years in the Levant\, working in Aleppo and Damascus\, and wrote in Arabic\, as well as rendering translations into Latin of passage of the Qur’an.  As a representative of the “Golden Age” of Jesuit travel literature\, Nau introduced European audiences to some of the mores of Levantine Muslim cultures. Taken together\, the lives of men illustrate the diversity and complexity of Jesuit engagement with the Qur’an during the first century of the Society of Jesus. \n  \nPaul Shore has held teaching and research posts at Saint Louis University\, Harvard Divinity School\, Oxford University\, the University of Wrocław\, the University of Edinburgh\, Trinity College Dublin\, and Charles University Prague\, and in 2013 was the Alan Richardson Fellow in Theology and Religion at the University of Durham.  He is currently Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Canada and during autumn of 2018 was Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge University.  Shore’s publications include The Eagle and the Cross: Jesuits in Late Baroque Prague and Narratives of Adversity: Jesuits on the Eastern Peripheries of the Habsburg Realms (1640-1773)\, and a volume of poetry\, Encounters\, Estrangements\, Connections.  Environment Matters\, written with Lynn Whidden\, is forthcoming from Peter Lang.  Shore lives in Brandon\, Manitoba\, Canada where he is a deacon at St Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:A View from the (Other) Bridge: a Woman's Perspective on Ignatian Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nOn Thursday\, February 7\, at 7 p.m. in St. Joseph Chapel\, Regis College will host a public lecture  “A View from the (Other) Bridge: a Woman’s Perspective on Ignatian Spirituality\,” presented by guest-speaker Sr. Gemma Simmonds\, CJ. \nFor centuries women have been collaborating with the Jesuits in the pastoral practice of the Ignatian spiritual heritage. In doing so they have brought to bear on it a particular creative wisdom born of their own experience. Through the perspective of Mary Ward and other Ignatian women\, this lecture explores the questions raised by looking at the heritage from another viewpoint. \nSr. Gemma Simmonds\, CJ\, is a Senior Lecturer in Pastoral Theology at the Margaret Beaufor Institute of Theology in Cambridge\, UK\, and Director of the Religious Life Institute. Sr. Gemma Simmonds is a religious sisters of the Congregation of Jesus and an honorary fellow of Durham University. She is a past president of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain and has studied at the universities of Paris\, Cambridge\, London and Rio de Janeiro. She studied at St. Edmund’s College\, Cambridge for a doctorate on the early Jansenists. DESCRIPTION:This Fall Film Series\, 2018\, looks at the desire for a place of belonging and community that is rooted in what it means to be human. The Beatitude in Matthew’s Gospel: Blessed are the Meek\, they shall inherit the Earth\, addresses this longing. The Meek here are the ones without power\, displaced\, abused\, overlooked\, cast out\, and to promise them the earth for an inheritance is to promise them a place where they can establish themselves\, discover their identity\, have a future where they can pass on their heritage and traditions\, and celebrate life together. \nMonty Williams\, S.J.’s courses and research explores the dynamics of desire and narrative in spirituality using contemporary critical theory and film\, His work in spirituality and direction started in his formation as a Jesuit in the early seventies. In the summers he can usually be found giving retreats and workshops throughout Europe\, Australia\, Asia and North America.
