SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Annual Royackers Lecture 2020: Value and Faith in a Stratified World
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nPlease note that both this event and the Toronto School of Theology Conference have been cancelled due to precautionary measures against the spread of COVID-19\n\n  \n  \n“Value and Faith in a Stratified World: How Social Structures Preserve\, Undermine\, and Transform Value.”\nValue is a notion most fundamentally rooted in culture and in the virtue of persons. Nonetheless\, social structures have fundamental causal impact on values\, whether preserving or undermining them. Critical realist sociology helps us understand how social structures have this effect: they present us with restrictions and opportunities that often alter the decisions we would otherwise make. \n  \nThis lecture also serves as the Plenary session of the Toronto School of Theology Conference 2020. \nPresented by Dr. Daniel K. Finn of the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University\, Minnesota. \n  \nThe Annual Royackers Lecture honours the memory of Fr. Martin Royackers\, S.J\, the first English Canadian Jesuit killed while serving overseas. It is made possible through the generosity of Mundiregina Resources\, Canada.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: "Finding God in the Mess" Retreat with Jim Deeds and Brendan McManus\, SJ
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event has been cancelled\nPlease join us for a retreat with the writers of “Finding God in the Mess: Meditations for Mindful Living” (Loyola Press\, 2020)\, Jim Deeds and Brendan McManus SJ of Northern Ireland.\n  \n \n  \nOur busy modern lives distract us and cause us stress. Technology\, media\, jobs\, family\, appointments\, hobbies—it can all feel like a mess. How do we carve out time for mindful contemplation and prayer? How can we make our prayer time mindful and fruitful and perhaps even restorative? \nThe spirituality of Saint Ignatius of Loyola teaches us that God holds us close\, loves us\, and desires the best for us at all times. This truth is a solid foundation upon which we can build our lives\, find an anchor amid life’s storms\, and bring us through our darkest hours. Finding God in the Mess is the perfect tool to help us use Ignatian spirituality to learn to pause\, take time to be with God\, contemplate our lives\, and recognize God’s presence in all of it\, especially the hard times. \n  \nSchedule: \n9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Guided Retreat\nCelebration of the Eucharist: 12:00 – 1:00 PM\nBook Signing and Musical Performance by Jim & Fr. Brendan: 1:00 – 2:00 PM \nCost: $50; fee includes a copy of the book “Finding God in the Mess: Meditations For Mindful Living” \n  \nAbout the Retreat Leaders: \n  \nFr. Brendan McManus is an Irish Jesuit priest. Raised on a farm in Lisnaskea\, Northern Ireland\, he studied psychology and I.T. at university. While working as an Interface Designer for Hewlett Packard\, his dissatisfaction with the “yuppie” lifestyle led him to enter the Jesuits in Dublin. \nAs a priest he has worked with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir in Dublin\, as editor of the ‘Irish Jesuit News’\, and served as a school chaplain and photographer in Galway. His previous book\, ‘Redemption Road: Grieving on the Camino’\, deals with healing and recovery in the aftermath of his brother’s death by suicide. He currently works in the area of spirituality and spiritual accompaniment in Belfast. \n  \nJim Deeds is a husband\, father\, writer\, and broadcaster who works in pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Belfast. His previous books include Surfing Life’s Waves (2015)\, Gym For the Soul (2018)\, and Deeper Into the Mess (2019). You can find out more about Jim and his work on Facebook and Twitter. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Passover & Easter According to the Gospel of John - 2020
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n  \nPassover and Easter are both feasts about the journey from slavery to freedom. This course will explore both feasts from the perspective of Jewish and Christian traditions. John’s Gospel is the primary text of the course. Focus will be on the complexity of the Passion narratives and the difficult texts related to Jews and Judaism. Other Jewish and Christian sources will include: Exodus\, Psalms\, Liturgical texts. Students will participate in the festivals of Passover and Holy Week/Easter and visit sites relevant to the programme. \nABOUT THE CENTER FOR BIBLICAL FORMATION \nBiblical formation is at the heart of the life and ministry of the Congregation of Notre Dame de Sion. The Centre for Biblical Formation in Jerusalem offers programs of study centred on the Word of God: drawing on Jewish sources and tradition; visiting sites related to the biblical text; reflecting on relevant Church Documents; and engaging with the peoples of the Land. \nAs a participant at the Centre you will have the unique opportunity to study\, contemplate and pray with the biblical text in the Land so central to its composition. You will be part of an international\, ecumenical community exposed to the best of contemporary Christian and Jewish scholarship. SUMMARY:La théologie pratique comme pratique théologique: une lecture d’Actes 10-11
DESCRIPTION:St. Peter Baptizing Cornelius (Acts 10: 44-48)\, Laurent Pécheux. \nLa théologie pratique comme pratique théologique: une lecture d’Actes 10-11\nFrench presentation with English PowerPoint bullets and summary\, followed by bilingual discussion\nThursday\, March 12\, 2020\, 7-9 pm.\n  \nQu’entend-on par « théologie pratique »? Can theology be “practical”? How does it involve “practices”? This presentation offers an understanding of practical theology based on three landmarks: experience\, conversion\, and interpretation. A reading of Acts 10-11 will accompany this view of a very active and crucial theological field. \nRobert Mager has taught Christology and Fundamental Theology at the Université du Québec (Trois-Rivières\, 1994-2004)\, and Practical Theology at Université Laval (Quebec City\, 2004-2015). SUMMARY:Art Exhibition Reception - "Salt of The Earth: People of Bruce & Grey Counties"
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n \n  \nSalt of the Earth: People of Bruce & Grey Counties is a compelling touring photography project from the Tom Thompson Art Gallery of Owen Sound\, Ontario.  The exhibit highlights over 40 years of environmental portraiture work by Willy Waterton. \n  \nFor Waterton\, the term “salt of the earth” describes “a decent\, dependable\, unpretentious person.” This phrase describes the people in the area\, whom Waterton had the honour and privilege of photographing over his career as a photojournalist. \n  \nThis selection of 20 photographs challenges the historical notions of portrait photography by examining through a contemporary lens the ordinary – yet extraordinary – diligent and humble people of the community. Each of these photographs documents a way of life that has vanished or is currently disappearing from life in Northern Ontario. \n\n  \n  \nAbout the Artist:\nA self taught photographer\, Willy Waterton spent 35 years as a full time photojournalist at an Ontario daily newspaper. During his tenure as chief photographer\, he oversaw the transition from black and white to colour\, then finally to digital. His newspaper photographs have won over 100 provincial and national awards. In 1990\, Willy was named Ontario News Photographers’ Association Photographer of the Year. \nHis photography has appeared in national and international magazines\, newspapers\, and books including the Globe and Mail\, New York Times\, and National Geographic. His work is in both public and private collections. \nWilly’s lifelong love for the Niagara Escarpment and Bruce & Grey Counties has led to his photographic commitment to protect and interpret this special part of Canada for viewers to enjoy. \n  \n  \nThis exhibit will be on display at Regis College until Monday\, May 4.\n

John Mary Fraser Centre of Practical Theology” (or the “Scarboro Missions Chair of Inter-religious Dialogue”) was made possible through the Scarboro Missions Legacy. Scarboro Missions is a Society of Apostolic Life of Canadian Catholics\, priests and laity\, motivated by the Spirit and dedicated to the person\, teaching\, and mission of Jesus Christ as expressed in his words: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10).
