SUMMARY:A Just Future For All: Resisting a Democracy Recession ft. Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj\, SJ
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin our friends Canadian Jesuits International on Tuesday\, November 24 at 2:00 pm (EST) for this co-sponsored webinar. Fr Xavier Jeyaraj SJ will speak about the alarming transformation of democracy in the world with the election of authoritarian regimes into office. His presentation will focus on India\, the world’s largest democracy\, with parallels drawn with changes taking place in Latin America\, Asia\, Africa and North America. Fr Xavier will also speak of how justice\, equality\, human rights\, and “development for all” are being redefined by authoritarian governments all over the world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile this trend is alarming\, we also find hope in the voices heard through public protest demanding alternative models of society. The courage of people\, particularly young people\, who oppose the democratically elected ‘dictators\,’ demanding a JUST FUTURE FOR ALL\, can lead to transformative changes for a future built on love\, equality and justice. \n  \nAbout Fr Xavier Jeyaraj SJ\n  \n \n  \nXavier Jeyaraj SJ is responsible for the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat (SJES) of the Society of Jesus in Rome. He has a PhD in Social Sciences with his research focusing on extractivism and mining and its impact on Indigenous people and the environment. He has 30 years of experience as a social worker\, human rights lawyer and social activist. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRegistration is via Canadian Jesuits International. Click here to visit their registration page.\n  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Annual Royackers Lecture 2020: Value and Faith in a Stratified World
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nPlease note that both this event and the Toronto School of Theology Conference have been cancelled due to precautionary measures against the spread of COVID-19\n\n  \n  \n“Value and Faith in a Stratified World: How Social Structures Preserve\, Undermine\, and Transform Value.”\nValue is a notion most fundamentally rooted in culture and in the virtue of persons. Nonetheless\, social structures have fundamental causal impact on values\, whether preserving or undermining them. Critical realist sociology helps us understand how social structures have this effect: they present us with restrictions and opportunities that often alter the decisions we would otherwise make. \n  \nThis lecture also serves as the Plenary session of the Toronto School of Theology Conference 2020. \nPresented by Dr. Daniel K. Finn of the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University\, Minnesota. \n  \nThe Annual Royackers Lecture honours the memory of Fr. Martin Royackers\, S.J\, the first English Canadian Jesuit killed while serving overseas. It is made possible through the generosity of Mundiregina Resources\, Canada.
