This course will examine the methods of biblical interpretation used in the Church from New Testament times through the 4th century and the theological issues that influenced them. Beginning with the Jewish forms of exegesis found in the New Testament, the survey will continue with the allegorical method, visual exegesis, the desert fathers, the schools of Antioch and Alexandria, and the impact of the 4th century Christological debates. Key interpreters such as Irenaeus, Origen, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Jerome, Ambrose, Gregory of Nyssa, and Augustine will be discussed.
This 8-week lecture series will take place from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm in the St. Joseph Chapel of Regis College on select Wednesdays throughout the Winter 2018 semester:
